Neighbors rescue two occupants from burning house in Mount Vernon

Fire destroyed a single-family home in Mount Vernon Sunday afternoon, but not before two neighbors helped the occupants get out. Davison County Chief Deputy Steve Harr heard the fire whistle around 2:15, turned on his scanner and learned the fire was two doors from his residence. “My wife and I went over there and the house was completely covered in smoke,” said Harr. “After quite a bit of trying we managed to get part way inside and got the residents out of it.”

One was an elderly woman in a wheelchair and the other her adult daughter. Both were checked out at the scene and are OK.  Harr says they’re staying with family members. Harr says he and his wife Connie are also OK.

There’s no word yet on what caused the fire as the investigation is ongoing.

Mount Vernon and Mitchell Fire Departments responded as well as Mitchell EMS, the Davison County Sheriff’s Office and Salvation Army.
