On 10-10-18 at approximately 1808 hours the Mitchell Fire Department and Mitchell Police Department responded to an apartment fire at 1001 S. Burr #248, Mitchell SD. Upon initial investigation, the fire appeared to be suspicious in nature. The renter of the apartment, 64 year old Harry Kirkvold , was interviewed in regards to the nature of the fire. Kirkvold was interviewed at the Police Department. Kirkvold said that he was involved in an ongoing feud with his next door neighbor. Kirkvold admitted that he had used gasoline to start the fire in his apartment in an attempt to make it look like his neighbor had started the fire. Kirkvold was arrested for 1st Degree Arson, a Class 2 felony. No one was injured in the fire. There was significant damage to Kirkvold’s room as a result of the fire. No other rooms appeared to have been damaged as a result of the fire.
A class 2 felony is punishable by up to 25 years imprisonment and a $50,000 in fines.
