Mitchell High Art students competing for $75,000 prize

A group of Mitchell High School art students is in the running for a $75,000 prize and needs your help.

Art Teacher Marica Shannon says Mitchell is one of 50 schools competing in the Van’s Custom Culture contest. It’s national high school customization competition using blank Vans shoes to be customized around specific themes. This year’s themes are Local Flavor and Off the Wall.

One entry is “Fire and Ice” in the Off the Wall category. It includes sea glass depicting weather extremes. Jessica Uher is the lead designer assisted by several other students.

The other entry in the Local Flavor category is based on the Corn Palace. Isaac Kitchens is lead-designer, also assisted by fellow students. It consists of colored corn from the Corn Palace and unraveled jute cord depicting natural grass.

Shannon says the on-line voting opens today. “Go to the Vans Custom Culture website and you can vote everyday for the next twelve days,” said Shannon. “Just vote!”

The web address is customculture.vans.com

Vans is also including a catered lunch for the entire school plus a concert as part of the grand prize.
